the city.

I've never been much of a city girl.
I grew up in a town of 100,000 people & the place I now call home is similar in comparision.
I love driving around in the country just to drive.
I love going to the grocery store & seeing familar faces (most of time I do at least).
I love being known.
I love tradition.
I love knowing where I’m going & that it’s not going to take me more than 10 minutes to get there.
I love being able to swing by a friends house on the way home.
I love that I know my neighbors well & call them good friends.
I love that my running route is always accompined by seeing the same faces, children & dogs.
I love that I know when the high school lunch schedule is.
I love how easy it is to get around.
I love that tonight we went to a high school football game & listened to our senior pastor + youth pastor commentate the game on the radio.

but the city...
spending time in the capital of Ethiopia (Addis Abbaba) this summer was exciting.
it was adventurous.
sure, it was dirty, smelly, full of exhaust smoke, busy, frustrating at times, and it took 30 minutes to get anywhere...
but everyday was different.
discovering a new grocery store, coffee shop or resturant was a success.
seeing people from all different counties, cultures, all in the same place was new & exciting.
talking to anyone that could speak our language made us lots of new friends everywhere we went.
there was always something new and adventurous to do.
someone new to talk to & befriend.

I love the city.
I love not being known.
I love making a new way.

god has given me a passion for the city.
and I already miss it.
I don’t know what other cities that includes - but I look forward to finding out :)
{and because I am bad at taking pictures without people in them....my new friend David Parks let me showcase his! you can find them all on his zenfolio here. Thanks David!}
Tim Keller has some awesome works/sermons/articles/books regarding God's love for the city.
ReplyDeleteI <3 the city, too. My husband and I always say we could live anywhere. I always long to live in a ranch in the country... but then I could live smack dab in the middle of Manhattan too. I think God gave me a vagabond's spirit.
