man up and GO! [a trip in June, lead by my husband + yours truly]

Our mission at Man Up and Go is simple:  To compel men to bring hope by GOING to the fatherless, widows and oppressed.  We are called to fight for the least of these (Isa. 61) whether that is in your neighborhood or 7,000 miles away.  It is time to stand up for those who cannot standup for themselves.  So I challenge you to stop...pray and think about where you are called to GO; fight and bring hope by taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the darkest and most hopeless places in America and in the World.  We are on the clock and it is time to do something.  Join us in the fight and do a canon ball into the Man UP and GO movement!!!

[THIS is what Man UP is all about.  Stephen in Korah, July 2011]

I am really excited to share with you this morning that my husband will be leading a Man Up and Go mission trip to Uganda + Ethiopia June 5- June 15th.  I'm also excited (and a bit nervous) to tell you that he found his co-leader....ME!  So TOGETHER we will be leading a trip.  so, even though it's MAN UP, women can man up too!

As most of you know, Stephen & I went on our first "man up" mission trip to Uganda + Ethiopia together the summer of 2011 and our lives have never been the same!  Stephen is now on the leadership team of Man Up [just got home from their leadership retreat!] and they have a few trips planned this spring/summer that I wanted to pass the info along to you or your husbands (or fathers, brothers, sisters, friends).  It's an amazing opportunity to get your feet on the ground in Africa, love big on orphans, and see God in a new way.  I have blogged a lot about our trips [you can find those posts here] but would love to help answer any questions/fears/concerns you have.

created for care.

Created for Care.

why yes I am.  Especially as a momma.  We need care, we need to be refreshed + renewed.  We need time away from the every day life to rest.  We need to hear from God!  and for me, when I'm away, undistracted, and still... I can really hear God.

Last year, this adoptive momma retreat blew me away.  and usually experiences the first time set the bar  for greatness + the second and third time don't measure up.  Not this time!  It blew me away again.  There is just something about getting in a room with 450+ mommas that all have a heart for adoption....think about that.  450 women from all over the country!  God is for sure moving in the hearts of families all over our great nation and it's amazing to put so many of us in the same room for the weekend.

I have much left to process, and many a blog posts to come about what the good Lord spoke to me, but for now I wanted to write about my overal expiernce and share some pics of the beautiful girls I got to spend the weekend with!

first let me say, that you KNOW you are at a retreat with mommas when you all collectively get really excited about renting a MINI VAN.  (sisters, don't hate).  We had a good laugh about that.
But it was just amazing how God ordained the four of us to be together.  Lauren (on the right) was my roomie last year!  We met for the first time "in real life" as roommates and THEN god was so faithful to fulfill a dream to be TOGETHER in Ethiopia this summer!  (I got to take pics of her + her hubby meeting their daughter, Arsema!)  she has a beautiful story + writes it so beautifully on her blog.

Tara (middle) and I have been email/phone friends for about a year and a half and JUST met in real life this weekend!  she is a jewel of a friend with a similar story to mine and I am SO GLAD we got to spend so much time together this weekend talking, praying, crying, laughing and remembering god's faithfulness!  Just this time last year neither of us thought we were anywhere CLOSE to know who are children are & now we both have them all home!

Shelby (left) is a doll.  she's a baylor girl too (her & tara were roomies!) and we quickly realized we had a class together back in the day.  you just never know when you are going to meet a friend-for-life and that's exactly what SHE is.  I love her!

We made it to Lake Lanier (thanks to my mad driving skills ;) and had fun eating dinner & staying up late talking.  we all (minus Lauren) slept until 10:30 the next morning!!!  tired mommas ;)  it was so nice.  my sweet husband surprised me with a gift for a MASSAGE!  from camp + asher ;)  started the weekend off right!

I could really go on, but I'll spare you every detail of the weekend.

lets just say there were late nights, tears, lots of coffee, shopping, worship, new friendship, teaching, praying, laughing, healing and dreaming.

and lots of friends.  old friends.  new friends.  blog friends.  instagram friends.  life long friends. real life friends. africa friends. airplane friends.

seriously.  so much to process and take time to write.  and I can't wait to share what I learned + share more of my heart.  It was healed more than a little bit this weekend.  God is good.

One of the songs we sang that captured my heart, is "I know who goes before me, I know who stands behind, the God of angel armies is always by my side.  the one who reigns forever, He is a friend of mine!" (Whom shall I fear by Chris Tomlin)  it's become somewhat of an anthem.

If god is for us, who can be against us?

2012 in review.

2012 has been quite the year.

(our story via Fotolanthropy coming soon!)

from ringing in the new year in Rwanda to having our two sweet precious ethiopians home with us by christmas (and spending 2+ months living in the country that holds my heart) I'd say 2012 was a pretty darn good year.

I've never done this before, but I wanted to go through and chose some of my favorite posts from 2012 (obviously I had a hard time narrowing them down).  I didn't realize how much it would ignite my soul.  reading through my fears and dreams from earlier this year & how God answered them and what He did.  as Jenna said, he's so good and faithful even when we are blind & can't see it.  He's been oh so faithful to me.  and this year was quite the journey - the glorious ending to a 2+ year adoption process and being called "mommy" for the first time.

I can't wait to see what He has in store for 2013! and instead of telling you all my resolutions & goals now...I'll just try to live it + tell the story later.

(I did these posts in the order they happend - and realized if you are new here, you'll pretty much know who I am and what I'm about after reading a few of these)

totally feel like that prayer was finally answered.

ready for camp (1st referral post!)

doubling the love (the camp + asher announcement)

embassy part 3- the plane ride home.

first off, let me say just sitting down to type this story almost makes me nervous.  The flight home was always a fear of mine since the beginning of the adoption process, but I refused to read any horror stories or even listen to them.  So, I don't want to terrify you. I just have to tell the story :)  SO - if you are going to be headed overseas soon to bring home your babies, read this with an open mind.

We left the guest house, with a van full of my boys, and everything was dandy.  I was not looking forward to the goodbye at the airport - I don't like goodbyes, and I always cry in the Bole International Airport departure lot.  I just do.  But, it wasn't too bad.  GRACE.

We get through security without any bumps or bruises and just mozy on through the elite line for ET air.  no, we aren't elite.  but I took a tip from mama kiki, and I went for it.  and it worked and they were extremely kind.  It was the first time really we were out around Americans with our babies.  Never knowing what to expect from people, I was plenty surprised by the kind and encouraging words we got from strangers.  Everything was so smooth - it's like we were pros or something.

We get into the main holding area and settle in with the babies.  We were shocked to hear that our bulkhead seats were not fully reserved!  My husband knows how to take care of us, so he fought hard for those seats- and eventually we got em!  TIP: GET THE BULKHEAD if you are traveling with a baby (see pic below).

While waiting, our babies made us all sorts of friends.  and I have decided that while I"m not a huge fan of flying, I do indeed love airports.  Airports are such an amazing place to watch & meet other people.  and on a flight back to DC, so many on our flight were headed home from court/embassy/mission trips. and plus, wendy/megan and the whole medical team from Visiting Orphans was on our flight!  (ps - we did that on purpose!  we found out our embassy date the morning they left the states!)

So, we got on the flight.  look at the pic of all 4 of us - well, didn't last for long.  I never knew this, but if you are traveling with two infants you can NEVER sit on the same row.  In this case it was for the bulkheads but domestically it's because of the oxygen masks.  good to know....

So because the man next to us in our first row seemed really grumpy, I decided to take the other row.  bad choice.  With the bulkhead position, not only could I not see my TV, but I left my magazine in Addis, my book was in the checked bag and my phone was dead with no charger.  SO.  I had nothing to do for 17 hours but obviously take care of the babes.  I kept thinking about how I was going to tell people that I sat in between a 100% blind man & a 7 month pregnant lady.  pretty funny circumstances, right?

well.  it was all going fine & dandy.  I was loving my role as a mom & getting to take care of the babies every need.  Asher was with me & Camp was with Stephen but it seemed i was on diaper duty.  Thankfully the people around us were all super encouraging (literally, speaking encouraging words!) and again, made more friends who had just come off the mission field.  it distracted me in a good way.

THEN.....
well lets just say the last 7 hours were traumatic.  one would cry and once I finished feeding/changing/burping/etc the other one would cry.  at one point they were BOTH crying and then I was crying!  We kept getting in the way standing around trying to calm them and I remember one moment so well when I was basically yelling at Stephen telling him I was a terrible mother & I didn't know what to do.  traumatic.  feeling like a whole airplane was watching your every move as a first time momma with two new babies on a 17 hour flight.  (did I mention that we found out when we got home that BOTH of them had double ear infections??)  Thank the Lord for Wendy!  At one point, through tears I handed Asher to her & said "I don't know what to do!".  And although she was emotionally and physically wrecked she stepped up.  and I"m forever grateful!!

we made it to DC.  finally.  After getting about 10 minutes of shut eye on a 17 hour flight, we were both feeling utterly exhausted.  more than exhausted.  we both felt like we were hallucinating and I remember a few times saying, "I might literally fall over"  I felt like I had vertigo and i've never felt so strange in my life.  but we didn't have time for our next flight so I had to kick it in high gear.  Hurricane Sandy almost delayed our travel -- we ended up waiting for 1.5 hours in line to try to get our bags re-checked & then surprise surprise they were lost & we didn't get them until 3 weeks later! Thankfully, we had these 2 again.  Meet Megan & Wendy.

these two saved the day.  broke all my "cocooning" rules right off the bat on that flight home - but you gotta do what you gotta do.  we tag teamed it while we ate at five guys (which we later realized made us all SICK!!!)  - bottles, changing, me changing, medicine, etc.  but we did it.  and they went their way and we got on our flight to Houston.

This angel of a woman, who was on our first ethiopian flight, approached us at the gate and told us if we needed anything to let her know.  She's originally Ethiopian but lives in Canada and was going to Houston to visit her sister.  but I think she was just an angel sent to us.  turns out, she was on one of our rows (remember when I said we couldn't sit together).  SO - she took my middle seat, held Asher the whole way so I could sit by my hunny and take care of Camp.  Oh praise you Jesus!  I finally got a few minutes of shut eye and Asher was happy as a clam.  (and I know that the real cocooning doesn't start until we get home - thanks to a few of my adoptive momma friends for giving me that advice!)

made it to Houston.  ran into some really excited Midland friends at the airport, had a few more friends  on our flight ;)  both babies slept the whole way home.....

ahhhh.  next post for all the airport party pics...
stay tuned!

embassy trip - part 2

I really wish that first night when I thought to myself "i should write down the first 24 hours as a parent" that I had.

that first night we were up all night with Camp.  Asher literally slept for 13 or 14 hours, but we were up I think 11 times with Camp.  And staying in basically someone else's home is difficult when you are up all hours of the night.  Going downstairs to make bottles, trying not to wake your neighbors (who by the way happened to be our good friends! more on that in a min)
but it was exhausting.

I remember a few days before we left for Addis asking Stephen what he thought it would be like to have them home.
He then proceeded to give me a very realistic list of the day to day as mom and dad, and I told him that sounded terrible and I did not sign up for that and I was scared out of my mind.
true.

so when we had a dreamy day with the babies that was JUST LIKE what I always daydreamed of, reality set in that night.  the first 24 hours.

I remember just saying so much the first few weeks that, " parenting is no joke".  and it IS no joke.  it's hard work yall.  and when you are starting to parent a child that you haven't spent entirely too much time with yet, it's like starting with a newborn.  getting to know them and knowing what soothes them helps.  and I look back now (after christmas) and it's like I didn't even know them yet.  I had no clue what I was doing (not that I do now!).  I'm laughing just thinking about it.  I mean, we didn't take any actual baby food.  we just gave them formula the whole time & then some baby food when we could snatch it from our friend Jason.  oh well, you live and you learn.

but jason!

this is Jason and Will Eyoba.  its seriously so cool how god works.  Jason, Stephen & I were all on our Man Up trip together July 2011.  (also with our friend Mitch)  We were all adopting from ethiopia just waiting for our referrals.  then jason & family switched agencies (same as ours) about the same time we did.  I was there when he traveled for court (his wife had a BABY the week before they were supposed to travel) and then we all went to embassy the SAME DAY!  Seriously?!  Such a God thing.  Since his wife is still nursing their sweet girl at home, he brought his brother and we all had fun the whole 3 days in Addis together.

our 3 days in Addis were basically just full of loving on our kiddos.  waking up, having coffee and breakfast all together in the common area, hanging out in our pjs.  felt like we were just in our friends living room the whole time - all cozy.  Our new best friend Alissa was living at this home & was a HUGE help to both of our families with the kids.  We went out of our favorite Korean restaurant with my good friend Somer, Lindsey & Tesfu, Jason & crew and OUR BOYS!!!

Our boys!  Eyob, David & Biligne are our family in Addis.   I know you've heard me talk about them all - especially Eyob, who is like our son.  They all came in from school for the weekend to be with us. It was so special and so much fun to have them around.  They LOVE the kids and I love them - so it was like a big family reunion.

while we were in Addis we also....

we went to the IEC bazaar with friends & saw friends we know and love!
we had our friends the Hilts over one day.
coffee at Kaldis.
went to pray over our friend Mitch & Shannons son Zion (who praise god is HOME!!)
and somehow we have NO pictures to prove it, but one of my best friends Wendy was in Addis and she & my other good friend Meagan came over to the guest house several times.

coffee ceremony at the guest house with the guys

and just lots of hanging out as a family!
me and my kids!

it really was a great few days.
but we were ready to get home & start life!
I never thought I'd say that since I'd love to be in Ethiopia more long term, but we were indeed ready to get home, get them in their beds, and start "real life."

next post is the flight home story :)

embassy trip. part 1.

Embassy - part 1.

so, yall have waited long enough.  geez.  I feel like I can't ever move forward until I catch up.  so this is me catching up!  the trip to EMBASSY!!!
We left Midland on Tuesday October 23 and headed to DC.  Our sweet friend Will drove us to the airport, prayed as we got out and took fun pics of us as we left Midland as a family of 2!

we made it to DC and as soon as we arrived Ethiopians surrounded us.  I LOVE the sound of them greeting each other & I really love greeting them in Amharic myself.  They LOVE it.  Got our bags & jumped in a cab and realized our cabbie was Ethiopian! Horray!  We talked all about Addis - favorite coffee shops, restaurants, and the recent prime ministers death.  This is when it really feels like Ethiopia is my home away from home.  We had a so-so last date night dinner at a local restaurant and hit the hay.

the next morning we got up bright and early and headed to the airport in DC.  we've got the whole travel-on-ethiopian-air thing down so we made it nicely to our gate after eating Chipotle (duh).

Stephen was particularly excited that we were on a DREAMLINER!   He is a major airplane nerd, so it was fun to watch him giddy with excitement!  (I think he was texting my dad the great news during this pic!)

the 12 hour flight was exciting as we were sooo ready to see the babes.  nothing too exciting happened.  oh, we ran into kelly putty and her crew who were up to awesomeness (read here!) pretty fun when we see friends on a flight to ethiopia!

So after 12 hours, we were finally in Addis!

it seriously felt like home.  every single time I've gotten off the Ethiopian Air flight in Addis I try to be the first one through all the lines.  I really am like a kid in a candy shop.  Went through visa line & customs and while Stephen was in line with security I scurried off to change in the bathroom (we were about to see the kids!)  I made it out in time to be brushed through security and out those airport doors.  So excited to see our friends Abi & Balcha waiting for us!  It only took about 1.5 minute for my Ethiopian cell to start blowing up - and I was home!

turns out we had about 30 min to kill before the transition home was open, so we headed to my fave coffee shop - Kaldis for some french toast and lattes! After spending 2 months here this summer, it was a nice feeling to be back on my old stomping grounds.  To know where I wanted to eat, how to get money out, have friends calling and texting me.  Just felt so normal cruising down the road in addis jamming out to Jah'Lude!

SO - this was it!  We were about to see the kids!!!!!  Hadn't seen them in 7+ weeks and I had butterflies!!!  Abi came in with us to video and take pics & it was so comforting to have a good friend in the room.  Abi (part of the Ethiopian Guest Home!) has been with us since our first trip to Africa in July 2011.

and....
Asher was first!

then mr camp!

I mean, they seemed HUGE to me.  I left and they were little babies and now they seemed like kids!  I mean, that moment pulling them into me and loving them and kissing them and telling them how much we missed them.  You can't tell that much in the pictures, but Asher started crying!  Sweet thing.  But after a few minutes, we was back to loving on her sweet mommy + daddy.

The nannies at the home loved our babies so well.  They were treated amazingly and we were always so at peace with the way they cared for our two.  We wanted to honor them and thank them so much for everything they did to love on and care for our babies!

We thought we'd have a long visit and coffee ceremony, but almost right after we got there we were told embassy was closing the next morning so we needed to get over there ASAP.  So - we quickly signed their release papers, gave sweet thank you gifts + a family pic to the nannies, said our goodbyes and scurried to the car.

I wish the other nannies who I came to love this summer were there to bid us farewell, but I was thankful for these ladies!  One of them even cried when we left.  I can't imagine how hard that is for them to fall in love with these babies & then know they will probably never see them again.  I applaud them for the work that they do!!

{first family of 4 official pic!!}

NOW.
I wish I had photos + video of my  hurrying around to try to make sure everything was in the diaper bag.  and video of us leaving the transition home.  It almost felt like we were doing something we weren't supposed to do - just walking out with them.  As we got into the van, we just sorta looked at each other and said "so they are ours now?"  It was like disbelief!  We raced over to the embassy with Asher in my lap, and Camp in Stephens.  I can't even imagine what was going through their little minds.  Asher was LOVING the wind in her face and in general they both seemed happy with us, and in their new cute outfits I might add.  We got to the embassy, strapped em in the ergos, grabbed the diaper bag and off we went.  Turned in our cell phones, went through security and headed to America :)  or america it surely seems.  we waited our turn in the waiting room (while judge judy played on the nearby tv) and were called up to window 7.  We finally met face to face the man we'd been communicating with all summer - he's a Texan, so we talked Texas, signed a few papers and it was done.  Usually you have to wait 24-48 hours to get your visas to leave the country but since the next day was a national holiday - we waited about 10 min, got our visa and were done.  We literally could have left that day if we wanted (and if we were crazy!).

But they are officially OURS!  OURS!!!!  such an amazing feeling after 2 years of waiting, paper chasing, fundraising, praying, crying, and wondering if it would ever happen.  Our promise was fulfilled!  our dawn was here!  our family went from 2-4!

obviously, all the driving around town made the babes tired.  so we took our first family nap.  isn't this what you dream of when you dream of  having babies?  you know it's not all butterflies and roses, but THIS.  this is what you dream about.

later that night, we gave them their first bath.  and luckily, our good friend from home Wendy was in Addis on a mission trip and came over to help us document it ;)  let's just say they might have gotten baptized that night.

and that my friends, was the day they became ours.
you realize that this whole post happened in less than 2 days time.
what a whirlwind.
and we came to realize that the day wasn't over yet...but more on that the next post!
